Celebrating Earth Day with Compressed Natural Gas

Earth Day is on a Friday this year, and many businesses around the country will kick off the weekend by promoting greener, cleaner-burning fuel. Awareness has been rising in recent years about compressed natural gas (CNG) and its increasing role as an alternative energy source.

We initially explored the environmentally friendly properties of CNG in September of 2015, and its impact in the energy sector continues to grow. Natural gas now accounts for 27% of domestic energy consumption, coming in second only to oil. While the primary use of this resource is for heating space and water, its role in other sectors is increasing all the time.

Cleaner CNG Recognized Nationwide

Communities across the country are realizing the potential of CNG—and Earth Day is the perfect time to put it in the spotlight. For example, the city of Santa Clarita, California will be showcasing a CNG bus as part of their 2016 Earth/Arbor Day Festival. Attendees and their families will have the opportunity to explore and learn about this bus and how it operates with maximum efficiency and minimal environmental impact.

In Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, they had their own celebration last year. They opened a new CNG station to fuel tractor trailers—and unveiling it on Earth Day couldn’t have been more apropos. Besides providing a new energy source for vehicles, opening this station will result in a reduction of over a million pounds of carbon dioxide gas emissions, according to energy experts.

Coming in before both of the above festivities was Wasatch County, Utah. In 2013, they celebrated Earth Day by switching their recycling trucks from running on biodiesel to CNG. The new trucks run much more cleanly than their predecessors and actually make less noise to boot—cutting down on another type of pollution while picking up recyclable waste.
